The South Canterbury Region

Timaru is a vibrant community.  Our housing is affordable – the average house value in March 2024 was $526,729; and the commute to work only takes 5 to 10 minutes.  Friends and family can engage in a variety of recreational and sporting activities, including camping, tramping, boating in the lakes district, skiing with a choice of four fields within an hour’s drive.  The jewel in our crown is stunning Caroline Bay which is in the top 10 most loved beaches in New Zealand. Not only is Caroline Bay a wonderful asset for Timaru, but it also boasts a brand new playground, one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The Bay area also features a skate park, paddling pools, a mini-town bike park for kids, 18 hole mini golf and of course our Christmas carnival. Caroline Bay is truly a wonderful spot to enjoy time with family and friends.

Our community is well serviced with education, health and recreational services along with a vast range of clubs and organisations.  The South Canterbury District Health Board is one of the premier health providers in New Zealand, while the Ara Institute of Canterbury offers tertiary educational services.  From preschool through to tertiary education, South Canterbury offers a diverse and high-quality educational continuum.  Whether you prefer boarding facilities, state or integrated schools, or single-sex and co-educational schooling, there are numerous options available to accommodate every educational preference.

If you would like to find out more about the fantastic lifestyle South Canterbury has to offer, check out the Venture Timaru website.  Venture Timaru have a raft of information and resource tools that showcase Timaru and the wider region.
